Valentina stood beneath the crystal chandelier, clutching her empty jewelry box while accusing Sofia of stealing her priceless necklace.
“She put it inside her bag,” Valentina shouted, pointing toward Sofia as every guest turned toward the frightened tutor.
Sofia froze beside the marble staircase, unable to understand how a necklace she had never touched suddenly became her accusation.
“Open her bag,” Valentina demanded, her voice trembling with confidence as two guards stepped forward to obey.
Rafael moved between them immediately, raising one hand and ordering everyone to stop before another step was taken.
“Nobody touches that bag,” Rafael said coldly, staring directly at Valentina as suspicion quietly spread across the room.
Valentina narrowed her eyes and whispered, “Why are you protecting her when everyone knows what she did?”
Rafael pointed toward the necklace box and asked, “Then tell me something, Valentina, who placed it inside her bag?”
The question silenced everyone, because nobody had actually seen Sofia touch the necklace or enter Valentina’s private room.
Before Valentina could answer, Dona Isabela appeared halfway down the staircase, holding her phone tightly against her trembling hand.
She listened silently, then stopped breathing for a moment as the voice from the medical center delivered unexpected information.
“Is that certain?” Isabela whispered, her face losing color while tears suddenly gathered beneath her terrified eyes.
The guests exchanged confused glances as Isabela slowly descended, still listening while something devastating seemed to destroy her composure.
“Repeat the results,” she demanded, gripping the railing as though the staircase itself had suddenly become unstable.
The voice answered again, explaining that several biological markers were inconsistent with the family relationship recorded in their files.
Isabela closed her eyes, realizing the accusation against Sofia might have been only one piece of a much darker secret.
Valentina stepped closer and asked, “What did they tell you?” but Isabela stared through her without answering.
Rafael noticed Isabela’s expression and quietly asked, “Mother, what happened?” while Sofia remained surrounded by suspicious guards.
Isabela finally looked at Sofia, then gave an unexpected command that made every person inside the mansion fall silent.
“Release Sofia immediately,” she ordered, her voice suddenly colder than anyone had ever heard from her.
The guards hesitated, looking toward Valentina for permission, but Isabela repeated the command with unmistakable authority.
“You heard me,” Isabela said. “Let her go now, and nobody touches her again.”
Sofia stepped away from the guards, tears filling her eyes as Rafael gently guided her toward the safety of the hallway.
Valentina remained motionless, staring at Isabela as though the woman had suddenly become a complete stranger.
“This is not finished,” Valentina whispered, but Isabela answered, “No, Valentina, it has finally begun.”
At the end of the corridor, Helena stood hidden behind a velvet curtain, silently watching every shattered piece of the family.
She slowly reached into her pocket and touched a small envelope, suggesting she already knew what the laboratory had discovered.
Helena smiled faintly and whispered, “They still believe the necklace is the real secret.”
Behind the mansion’s closed doors, the family prepared for answers, while Helena quietly disappeared into the darkness carrying the truth.
