The construction site erupted when a massive brick suddenly broke loose, crashing toward the company executive below.
“Watch out!” someone screamed as the worker lunged forward, pushing his boss away seconds before the debris struck.
“Call an ambulance, now!” the supervisor shouted, while the injured worker lay motionless beneath the scattered rubble.
The executive rushed toward him, trembling. “Stay with me, Daniel. Please, you saved my life.”
At the hospital, Daniel’s wife waited anxiously beside his bed, clutching their child’s worn schoolbag tightly.
“Ma’am, your husband is stable,” the doctor explained. “He should wake after the medication wears off.”
The company executive entered quietly and lowered his head. “I am deeply sorry. Your husband was injured saving me.”
He placed an envelope on the table. “The company will cover his treatment and provide compensation for his sacrifice.”
“This is fifty thousand dollars,” he said. “Please make sure his family receives every cent.”
But the project manager nodded quickly and whispered, “Understood, boss,” before leaving with the envelope.
Hours later, Daniel finally opened his eyes. “Did you get hurt?” he asked weakly, worrying about the executive instead.
“You nearly lost your life,” the executive replied. “Why are you asking whether I am okay?”
Daniel gave a faint smile. “When that brick fell, I thought I would die, but anyone there deserved saving.”
Meanwhile, Daniel’s wife quietly coughed into her hand while preparing to leave the hospital.
The executive noticed and frowned. “That cough sounds serious. Why haven’t you seen a doctor?”
She lowered her eyes. “Sir, I have no money for another treatment.”
“You received compensation,” he answered. “Why not use some of it for your medicine?”
She hesitated before answering. “They gave me three hundred dollars, so I saved it for our child’s school uniform.”
The executive froze. “Three hundred? Who told you that was your compensation?”
She looked confused. “The project manager said it was the company’s generous charity, and I should be grateful.”
His expression suddenly hardened. “Ma’am, the approved compensation was fifty thousand dollars, not three hundred.”
She stared at him in disbelief. “Then why did he only give me three hundred?”
The executive immediately called his assistant. “Bring me every payment record and every document concerning Daniel’s injury.”
Minutes later, the records appeared, revealing that the manager had secretly diverted the remaining money.
“You stole from a man who nearly died saving me,” the executive said coldly. “You are finished.”
Security escorted the manager away while the executive personally arranged Daniel’s complete medical treatment.
He returned with another envelope and placed it beside Daniel. “This is your full compensation, and your wife’s medical bills are already paid.”
Daniel stared at him, overwhelmed. “I don’t know what to say, sir.”
The executive smiled gently. “You saved my life without asking who I was, so I refuse to let your family suffer.”
Then he offered Daniel a new position. “When you recover, I want you managing this construction site.”
Daniel’s eyes filled with tears as his wife whispered, “You saved him, and now he has saved us.”
The executive shook Daniel’s hand. “Character cannot be purchased, Daniel. You earned this opportunity long before I knew your name.”
